FAQs

Q) Do you repair silk handmade carpets?

A) Yes ! Persian Elegance specializes in repairing and cleaning of all types of handmade or machine made carpets.

Q) What is the difference between a carpet and a kelim?

A) A kelim is woven differently to a carpet. Kelims are flat woven and therefore do not have a pile. This makes them lightweight. Kelims are also reversible. Carpets on the other hand, have a pile. In machine made carpets, the pile can be made of synthetic materials such as nylon or polypropylene. In handmade carpets, the pile consists of natural wool. Q) What do the different names of carpets and kelims mean?

A) A carpet or kelim , is named according to its origin. Depending on the region it comes from, the name varies. For example a Shiraz carpet, similar to the Shiraz wine, originated from Shiraz, a city in Iran.

Q) How do I take care of my carpet/kelim?

A) Hand made carpets are extremely sensitive to chemicals and water. Incorrect cleaning techniques and harsh chemicals can lead to the carpet becoming destroyed. The natural dye can run and the carpet pile can be irreversibly damaged. It is important to vacuum your carpet carefully, and take them in to a professional for proper cleaning and de-dusting. You should also avoid placing your carpet in an area that is exposed to direct harsh sunlight. This can result in fading and premature aging of your carpet.

Q) Why are certain carpets more expensive compared to others?

A) The price of a carpet depends on its size, the density of knots (number of knots per square meter), the material used to weave the carpet (natural or synthetic), the type of dye (vegetable or chemical) and the region the carpet originates from.

Q) My carpet/kelim is constantly slipping on my wooden/tiled floors. How can I prevent this?

A) When purchasing a carpet for a wooden/tiled area , you must also purchase a under-carpet material , commonly referred to as “Carpet Break”. This material sticks to the carpet and the floor, without damaging or leaving residue, and prevents your carpet/kelim from slipping, saving you from any unforeseen medical bills!
